River Living is Back
(
10/15/2005)
River Living, the official newsletter of the Red River Waterway Commission, has resumed publication after an extended hiatus. “We are pleased to bring River Living back as a communications and marketing tool of the Commission,” said Alvin Owens, at-large commissioner and chair of the organization's marketing and public relations committee. “It is important to our mission to maintain and increase public awareness of the Waterway and its recreational and economic development activities.” The publication, originally developed in 1986, is sent on a periodic basis to a mailing list of community leaders, government agencies and interested citizens in the region. Economically, 2005 is already slated to be a banner year for the river. Two companies, Cleco and Steelscape, Inc, have decided to locate new facilities on the Red River. Cleco, a regional energy provider located in Pineville, LA, plans to build a $1 billion dollar power-generating unit that uses state-of-the-art Clean-Coal technology. According to Cleco, this project will create up to 1,200 construction jobs and 80 permanent jobs. In Shreveport, Steelscape, Inc., producer of cold rolled, metallic coated steel coils, plans to build a $200 million steel manufacturing plant at the Port of Shreveport-Bossier that will eventually employ up to 240 people. Two of the main reasons both companies decided to locate on Red River are because of easy access to water and the excellent condition of the river. It is estimated that with the addition of these two facilities, the total tonnage transported on Red River will more than double. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Red River. The benefits we'll witness in the coming years are the result of years of hard work by countless individuals. Thanks for reading!
